Marakissa Woods is a beautiful area south of Brikama and is a mix of open woodland, pools of varying sizes,(depending on the time of year) and cultivated areas.
This cross-section of habitat holds an abundance of birds. Black Crake, Levaillant Cuckoo, Western Marsh Harrier, Western-banded Snake, Long-Crested, Wahlberg`s and African Hawk Eagle, Red-rumped and Wire-tailed Swallow, Fanti Saw-wing, Scarlet-chested Sunbird, Piapiac, Woodland, Pigmy and Giant Kingfisher, African Golden Oriole, Snowy-crowned Robin Chat, Senegal Eremomela, Square-tailed Drongo, Blue-bellied Roller, African Thrush, and the outrageous Bearded Barbet gives you a glimpse of the birds easily seen in this, one of the most popular excursions. In the summer the pools come to life with a dazzling array of water plants and butterflies.
