There is no bad time of the year to see birds in Gambia but equally there is no “best” time. Its geographic position provides a superb opportunity at almost any time. The dry season from November to May is when most tourists visit, with almost guaranteed sunshine. Wintering species from Europe swell the dazzling and impressive numbers of resident birds. The rainy season from June until October makes some local roads difficult to negotiate and up-country trips are sometimes impossible. Many hotels close during this period and flights are considerably reduced. Ironically few people, except Gambians, see the transformation that rain suddenly gives to this sub-tropical climate. Fresh colour explodes into life transforming parched rice fields, savannah, gardens and even the golf course into lush emerald green landscape. Mosquitos are more active at this time of year (and so too are the crocodiles if you let them!)
